ITINERARY:

  • End: Day 4 at 22:00 in the center of Cusco.

Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Marqoq’asa – Soraypampa (14 km trekking, 5 hours)

We will pick you up at your hotel to take our transportation and leave Cusco towards Mollepata, where we can have breakfast. Also, we will be able to deliver the luggage we want the muleteer to carry and we will meet the person who will guide us along the trails for the next four days. After listening to some indications, we will get back into the vehicle that will take us to Marqoq'asa, where we will begin our hike. We will have the first views of the mountain scenery, weather permitting, as we advance to our first campsite: Soraypampa. Here, we will be able to rest, settle in, have lunch and then begin a 1.5 hour trek to the Humantay lagoon, located at 4100 m altitude and from where we can see the glacier with the same name, if the clouds allow it. Then, we will return to rest, have dinner and get ready to sleep.

Day 2: Soraypampa – Abra Salkantay – Chaullay (22 km trekking, 10 hours)

We will wake up very early for breakfast and prepare our things to leave with the first light of the morning. We will start the walk through a gorge between two mountains that will take us to Abra Salkantay, the highest point of our trek at 4600 m altitude, from where we can have views of the Humantay glacier and the Salkantay snowcapped peak. After a small thanksgiving ceremony to Apu Salkantay, we will continue the walk to Huayracpampa, where we will take a break for lunch and rest.

In the afternoon, we will continue to our next camp and see how the landscape changes from the low temperatures of the mountain to the warmer temperatures of the pre-jungle. We will arrive at the Chaullay camp where we will rest and have dinner to regain energy for the next day.

Day 3: Chaullay – Playa Sahuayaca – Aguas Calientes (11 km trekking, 5 hours)

We will have an early breakfast to start the trek of the day, advancing through this new landscape different from the mountain. We will have access to explanations about the vegetation of the area and see coffee and quinoa plantations as we progress to Playa Sahuayaca. Here we will have our lunch and then take a vehicle that will take us directly to Hidroeléctrica. From this place, we will take another walk along the train tracks to Aguas Calientes, where we will settle in our respective accommodations. Later, we will meet for dinner and receive the last instructions from our guide for the next day.

Day 4: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Today we will wake up particularly early, in order to have breakfast before taking the bus, or bring a box lunch with us to consume after climbing the stairs leading to the entrance of the Machu Picchu archaeological site. There, we will meet with our guide, who will give us interesting information about this place during a 1-hour tour. After this, we will have the rest of the free time, either to explore the rest of the places within the site or to climb one of the mountains, if you added one as an optional service: Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu. After this, we will leave the citadel to return to Aguas Calientes to pick up our belongings, have lunch, and wait for the train that will take us to Ollantaytambo. Here, the transportation will be waiting for us to take us to the center of Cusco, where we will end our activity.

Visit to the Archaeological Site

To enter the Machu Picchu archaeological site, you must have the entrance called Llaqta Machu Picchu. Remember that if you select a program without entrance, you can buy it on the Ministry of Culture's website.

The entrance will give you access to the archaeological site following one of its 4 circuits, which you must choose once you are at the entrance to the citadel:

  • Circuit 1: high and low parts of the archaeological site, as well as the area of terraces and platforms for 3 hours.
  • Circuit 2: high and low parts of the archaeological site, as well as the routes to Inti Punku and the Inca Bridge for 4 hours.
  • Circuit 3: lower part of the archaeological site that includes the agricultural zone, Temple of the Sun, Inca House, and the Archaeological Reserve for 1 hour and a half.
  • Circuit 4: lower part of the archaeological site that includes the agricultural zone, Temple of the Sun, Inca House, Sacred Rock, and water mirrors for 2 hours and a half.

We recommend that you choose circuit 2 to explore the citadel, as you can visit a greater number of attractions within Machu Picchu and take classic photographs. On the other hand, if you decide to add the visit to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain as an optional service, the time in the citadel is reduced, depending also on the time of your visit to one of the two mountains.

In case it is not possible to confirm the visit to the mountain as early as possible, the only possibility of visiting the citadel will be through circuits 3 and 4.
