It all goes back to the conflict between Peru and Ecuador in 1941. During the Zarumilla War, FAP Lieutenant José Abelardo Quiñones Gonzales, a young aviator from Lambayeque, took part in a combat mission over enemy positions. His aircraft was hit, and instead of retreating, he decided to steer it directly toward the enemy target, giving his life for his comrades and for Peru.
His bravery made him a symbol of sacrifice and patriotism, and his name was forever etched as one of the great heroes of Peruvian military aviation. 🕊️
📜 From the Feat to the Official Date
1941: José Abelardo Quiñones sacrifices himself in combat on July 23 and is posthumously promoted to FAP Captain.
1966: President Fernando Belaúnde Terry declares him a National Hero through Law No. 16126, establishing July 23 as the commemorative date for Peruvian military aviation.
2023: Through Law No. 31822, July 23 is officially declared a national holiday across the country, consolidating this date as part of Peru’s civic calendar.
