\nYears earlier, in 1902, Agust\u00edn Liz\u00e1rraga\u2014a local from Cusco\u2014had already visited the site and left his name inscribed on a wall of the Temple of the Sun. Bingham was the one who gave it worldwide exposure, not the one who “discovered” it in the strict sense.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nWhen Bingham arrived, two peasant families\u2014the Recharte and \u00c1lvarez families\u2014were already living and farming on the citadel’s terraces.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nIn Quechua,\u00a0<\/span>Machu Picchu<\/span><\/em>\u00a0means “Old Mountain,” referring to the peak on which the Inca citadel sits.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nThe citadel was built in the 15th century as a royal estate by order of Inca Pachac\u00fatec\u2014not as a capital or final refuge of the empire, as was believed for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n
