The Willka Kuti, or “return of the light,” falls on June 21st with the winter solstice, and it is one of the most profound spiritual experiences the Andes have to offer.<\/em><\/p>\n

What is the Andean New Year?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Andean New Year \u2014\u00a0<\/span>Willka Kuti<\/span><\/em>\u00a0in Aymara, or\u00a0<\/span>Inti Raymi Muyuy<\/span><\/em>\u00a0in Quechua \u2014 marks the beginning of a new solar cycle. For Andean cultures, June 21st is the shortest day of the year in the southern hemisphere: the longest night, after which the sun “returns” with renewed strength. This year marks the year 5,533 of the Andean calendar.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is not just a date on a calendar \u2014 it is a worldview. The Pachamama (Mother Earth) receives offerings, sacred fires are lit before dawn, and the first rays of sunlight over the mountains signal the beginning of a new cycle of life, planting, and community renewal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lighting of the sacred fire<\/span><\/strong>
\nBefore dawn, the\u00a0<\/span>amautas<\/span><\/em>\u00a0\u2014 Andean wise elders \u2014 light the ceremonial fire using ancestral methods. The smoke rises to the sky as a message to the Apus, the mountain spirits. Communities gather around it in silence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Offering to the Pachamama<\/span><\/strong>
\nFlowers, coca leaves, chicha, and food from the land are placed in a ceremonial\u00a0<\/span>despacho<\/span><\/em>. It is an act of gratitude and reciprocity with Mother Earth for the harvest of the ending year and the one to come.<\/span><\/p>\n

Receiving the first ray of sunlight<\/span><\/strong>
\nAs the sun rises, participants open their palms toward the sky to “receive” its solar energy. This is the most intimate moment of the ceremony \u2014 silent, collective, and deeply spiritual.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ceremonial music and dance<\/span><\/strong>
\nAfter the dawn ceremony, the celebration continues with\u00a0<\/span>siku<\/span><\/em>,\u00a0<\/span>pututu<\/span><\/em>, and\u00a0<\/span>quena<\/span><\/em>\u00a0music. Each community has its own ritual dances that tell the story of their relationship with the Andean cosmos.<\/span><\/p>\n

Communal feast<\/span><\/strong>
\nThe celebration ends \u2014 or continues \u2014 with shared food. Chu\u00f1o, quinoa, native potato, purple corn, and chicha de jora. Eating together is itself part of the ritual of community unity.<\/span><\/p>\n
